Teacher's Pet Mixed Media Board - Tando Creative

Teacher's Pet School Days Mixed Media Board by Dana Tatar for Tando Creative
Hi! I'm sharing the Mixed Media Board I altered for the Anything Goes theme this week on the Tando Creative Design Blog. My girls have just a couple more weeks of Summer before the school year begins and we are busy organizing supplies, shopping for new clothes and shoes, and preparing mentally for the upcoming year. I definitely have school on the brain and had a lot of fun creating this piece.

I started by applying a coat of chalkboard paint onto a mixed media board. Once that was dry, I spread a thin layer of spackle over the Letters Mask. Next, I cut a school girl from patterned paper and glued her to the board. I made a small embellishment with a Star Button that I painted bright yellow and then outlined with a black paint pen. I added a brass scissors charm and tied it to the button with a piece of red twine. I finished this board with a teacher's pet die-cut.

You can find the products I used for this project in the Tando Creative Retail Store. We'd love to see your creativity! Share your work with us in Tando's Creative Zone on Facebook.

Hi! I'm sharing the tutorial for these emoji wood slice nail polish holders on the Walnut Hollow blog today! I am a big fan of Walnut Hollow Basswood Country Round Coasters and have used them to create photo plaques, garden stakes, wreaths, ornaments, and garlands. I'm super excited about this fun project that combines emojis and organization. I created the two holders shown above for my daughters. I share the holder I created for myself on the Walnut Hollow blog. Do you think you can guess what emoji I used for myself? Click over to the Walnut Hollow blog to see if you're right!

Sun Artist Trading Card Trio - FabScraps

SUN Bathing Suit Artist Trading Card Trio by Dana Tatar for FabScraps
Hi! I'm sharing a set of artist trading cards that I created for FabScraps using their super fun Summer Loving collection today. One of my favorite items from each FabScraps line is their coordinating die-cut and chipboard pieces. I was able to cover these chipboard bathing suits super quick with the matching patterned paper bathing suit die-cuts. I have enough bathing suit drama to deal with in real life, so I was happy to not have any for this craft project!

I started these cards by covering ATC blanks with patterned paper. Next, I used a die-cut tag as a stencil with turquoise chalk ink to add bright green starfish to the background of each card. Then I glued the patterned paper covered chipboard bathing suits to each card. FabScraps offers an amazing selection of silver embellishments; I chose three shells for these cards. Once the shells were glued down, I added a puffy letter sticker from my stash to spell the word "SUN" across the cards. I finished each card with some line work with a white paint pen.

Here's a closer look at each card.

Beach Life Beach House - FabScraps

Summer Loving Beach Life Beach House by Dana Tatar for FabScraps
Hi! I'm sharing the beach house I put together using the super fun Summer Loving collection from FabScraps. I don't usually create 3D projects out of paper, but I was inspired by some of my teammates, who also created beach houses, to give it a try. I used two Tim Holtz dies to create this house, the Village Dwelling and the Village Surf Shack. I used an additional Tim Holtz die set, Tropical, to cut the paper embellishments I arranged around the circular chipboard base. I really love the coordinating chipboard that is included in every FabScraps collection as well as the textured cardstock that matches their paper.

Summer Loving Beach Life Beach House Right Side by Dana Tatar for FabScraps

The cover from the Summer Loving Chipboard Album made a great support piece for this beach scene. After a coat of acrylic paint, I trimmed the bottom edge of the chipboard cover to create a straight edge the piece could stand on. I glued the back of the house to the bottom of the chipboard ring and embellished it with paper die-cuts and chipboard pieces. I saved the Geami packing paper that was wrapped around a set of glasses to decorate the roof. I think it makes a pretty good imitation of a thatched straw roof!

Here's a close-up of the textured cardstock offered by FabScraps. I love that I was able to add some visual interest to this piece without the extra step of dry embossing.

Such A Delight - FabScraps

Such A Delight Bike Layout by Dana Tatar for FabScraps

Hi! I'm sharing a layout I created with the FabScraps C95 For the Love of Tea Collection. I wanted to show that you can create a beautiful page that isn't tea-themed with this line. I usually design my layouts as precise as I can, paying special attention to lining up all the page elements straight. It was fun to "let loose" and arrange the papers and embellishments on an angle.

Embossed Chipboard Bike by Dana Tatar for FabScraps

I always save the frames from the chipboard words to use in my designs as a bonus embellishment. I embossed three frames with bright blue embossing powder and then filled them with High Tea patterned paper. I used adhesive foam to attach the frames to the left side of the layout in a cascading fashion to create an interesting dimensional base for my photos.

I cut the bike from the chipboard album cover to use a an embellishment for this layout. I removed the cupcakes, flowers, and basket that were part of the design to create a more masculine piece.

Embossed and Embellished Chipboard Frames by Dana Tatar for FabScraps

I embellish the frames with flowers clusters cut from the Prepare for Tea patterned paper, and paper flowers and leaves.

I topped the page with an embossed word title. I doodled around the page with a white pen to finish the design.

Moonchild Altered Book - ColoriQue by Lisa Marie Jimenez

Moonchild Altered Book by Dana Tatar for ColoriQue by Lisa Marie Jimenez

Hi! I'm super excited to share my first official project as part of the ColoriQue team today! This month the team is focusing on upcycling thrift store items and found objects. I had a great time at the thrift store with my Mother-in-Law and used several of my purchases for this piece. I cut up and into an old book for this piece. I used ColoriQue to create a galaxy paint effect on both inside pages of this book, as well as on the front and back covers. I combined a lot of different materials on this project and ColoriQue works on all of them!

I'd love to have you stop  by the Lisa Marie Jimenez blog for my full tutorial. I share how I colored metal, glass, clay, ceramic tile, and paper with ColoriQue. I also share my thrift store finds, which you'll definitely be seeing more of in the coming months. If you're curious about the inspiration behind this piece, I talk about that too!

Ocean Mixed Media Board - Tando Creative

Ocean Sunrise Mixed Media Board by Dana Tatar for Tando Creative

Hi! I'm sharing the Mixed Media Board I painted for the Color Theme this week on the Tando Creative Design Blog. First, I primed a Mixed Media Board with DecoArt White Gesso. Next, I used DecoArt Crafter's Acrylic Paint to add a blue sky and some water using a mix of purple, pink, and grey. Once the paint was dry I stamped a bright pink sun using ColorBox Berry Chalk Ink and the Paper Wings Productions Earth and Sky Melange Cling Stamp Set just above the horizon.

Tea Pot Gift Box - FabScraps

Tea Pot Gift Box by Dana Tatar for FabScraps

Hi! I'm sharing a gift box that I altered for FabScraps using the C95 For the Love of Tea Collection. I'm currently obsessing over Licorice Spice tea and I thought it would be fun to share the love in a fab altered gift tin.

I started this fun piece by cutting a piece of Elegant Tea patterned paper to cover the top of the box lid. The For the Love of Tea Carder's Pack includes a stack of 6x6 patterned papers, as well as die-cuts that fit over the top of some of the coordinating chipboard in the line. These wonderful products make designing 3-D pieces so much easier for people like me who don't own fancy die-cutting machines. I assembled the die-cut tea pot from the Carder’s Pack, brushed the edges with purple dye ink, and then glued the tea pot to the top of the box lid at an angle. Next, I glued the “You’re my cup of tea” tea cup die-cut from the Carder’s Pack onto a chipboard tea cup and inked the edges of the chipboard with purple dye ink. I repeated the same process for a chipboard tea bag tag. To create one embellishment, I looped a piece of white twine through the hole in the top of the tea bag tag and taped the ends of the twine to the back of the chipboard tea cup to attach the two pieces of chipboard together. Finally, I attached both pieces of chipboard to the front of the die-cut tea pot with adhesive foam for a nice dimensional effect.

I embossed the Just for You chipboard word with Amethyst Iced Enamels and added it to the tea pot.

Next, I wrapped the base of the tea pot with lace ribbon and glued flowers, leaves, a ribbon bow, and flower clusters cut from the Prepare for Tea patterned paper around the base of the tea pot. I added a Tea for Two clear sticker to the back of the tea pot. I filled the tea box with my favorite flavor of tea.

Dreamer Shrine - Tando Creative

Dreamer Butterfly Crown Shrine by Dana Tatar for Tando Creative
Hi! I'm sharing the Shrine I altered for the Spray Ink theme this week on the Tando Creative Design Blog. I started this project by priming both sides of all the pieces of the shrine with a white spray primer. Next, I spread DecoArt White Modelling Paste over the stencil from the Nathalie Kalbach Fashion Dame Rubber Stamp Set onto the outer sides and roof of the shrine. Once the paste was dry, I sprayed the same pieces with a silver mist. Finally, I inked the edges with several colors of chalk ink and assembled walls of the shrine, holding the pieces together with hot glue.

Next, I spritzed the inside of the shrine with yellow mist. I used hot glue to attach a weathered metal butterfly, ornate metal oval, and blue gemstone to the back wall of the shrine. I added some silver rhinestone trim and a sticker to the base of the shrine.

I finished this piece by gluing on the roof pieces and topping it with a metal crown.

Sunbeam Mixed Media Board - Tando Creative

Sunbeam Mixed Media Board by Dana Tatar for Tando Creative

Hi! I'm sharing the Mixed Media Board I altered for the Anything Goes theme this week on the Tando Creative Design Blog. I primed my board with DecoArt White Gesso. Once that was dry, I used a spatula to spread on blue, silver, and pink paint that was very close to being dried up completely. This old paint was a fun way to not let my supplies go to waste and also create some cool texture at the same time!

Next, I spread more chunky paint over the Kaz Boughton Dotted Star Mask. I topped the sun with a chipboard circle from the Andy Skinner Industrial Elements Set that I colored with liquid inks. I finished this board with some black and white doodles and a hand-written quote.

You can find the products I used for this project in the Tando Creative Retail Store. We'd love to see your creativity! Share your work with us in Tando's Creative Zone on Facebook.

Be Yourself Poured Ink ATC - ColoriQue by Lisa Marie Jimenez

Hi! I'm sharing an artist trading card today that I created using ColorBox ColoriQue by Lisa Marie Jimenez. I used a poured ink technique to create the embellishment on the center of this card. Unlike other poured ink techniques, this process only requires ONE product! I only used ColoriQue to create the circle sticker on this piece. I also used ColoriQue to color the cardstock, chipboard frame, glass gems, and decorative brass piece on this project. ColoriQue is so versatile!

I have a quick video that shares this easy 2-step process.

The embellishment on this artist trading card is the first poured ink piece from the video.

If you'd like to create a similar trading card, follow these instructions.

Step 1: Use a paintbrush to apply Grape Vine ColoriQue to a blank artist trading card base. Apply ColorBox Black Crafter's Ink to a citrus slice stamp. Repeatedly stamp the card base until covered.

Step 2: Use an Art Dauber to apply Pacific Ocean ColoriQue to a chipboard artist trading card frame. Apply ColorBox Berry Crafter's Ink to a small polka dot banner stamp. Repeatedly stamp the chipboard frame until covered. Glue the chipboard frame onto the stamped artist trading card base.

Step 3: Clean a decorative brass piece with rubbing alcohol. Use a paintbrush to apply Poppy ColoriQue to the brass piece. Let dry. Sand the brass piece to highlight the raised areas. Cut a piece of burlap the same size as the brass piece. Glue the burlap to the back of the brass piece. Glue the brass piece onto the center of the trading card.

Step 4: Use the poured ink technique to create an embellishment for the center of the card. I used a blank foam sticker for this piece. Add several drops of Snow Summit, Poppy, Pacific Ocean, and Frisco Bay ColoriQue to a small plastic cup. Slowly pour the ink onto the sticker. Let the embellishment dry overnight. Apply a layer ColoriQue Sealant for a dimensional gloss finish. Glue the sticker onto the center of the card.

Step 5: Paint 4 small glass gems with Pacific Ocean ColoriQue. Once the gems are dry, glue one gems onto each corner of the card.

Step 6: Apply "Be Yourself" epoxy word stickers along the bottom of the brass piece.

Step 7: Attach a dark blue gemstone to the bottom of the card.

Supplies:

Cuppa Love Tag Set - FabScraps

Cuppa Love Shabby Chic Tag Set by Dana Tatar for FabScraps

Hi! I'm sharing a tag set that I created for FabScraps using the C95 For the Love of Tea Collection today. I had a lot of fun with both color and texture for this tag duo. One of my favorite products by FabScraps is the amazing collection of coordinating chipboard that comes with each line. They really make designing fun as the options to personalize the raw chipboard are endless. I didn't use any fancy techniques to alter the chipboard for these tags, but rather focused on bold color.

Distressed Mixed Media Chipboard Embellishment by Dana Tatar for FabScraps

To begin, I brushed a layer of gesso over two tags. Next, I placeed the Parasol stencil over the tags and spread molding paste over the top. While the paste was still wet, I sprayed the tags with pink, blue, and gray mist. Once the tags were dry, I glued torn pieces of Social Tea patterned paper blue lace side up to the tags and then added flower clusters cut from the Prepare for Tea patterned paper, flowers and leaves, stick pins, and cheesecloth onto the center of the tags.

Distressed Mixed Media Chipboard Tag by Dana Tatar for FabScraps

I built a layered chipboard embellishment for the center of each tag with three pieces of chipboard; a tag that I covered with High Tea patterned paper, a chipboard Heart Teacup with Saucers, and a chipboard word (either Cuppa or Love, which is sold as one set). I colored the tea cups and words with pigment ink and then brushed the edges of the chipboard cups and words with brown dye ink. I add a mini clothespin to the top of each chipboard tag.

For the Love of Tag Cuppa Love Tag Set by Dana Tatar for FabScraps

I colored the edges of each tag with pink watercolor paint and then dry brushed gesso over each tag for a shabby look. I finished each tag by using white twine to attach seam binding bows to the top for a pop of color.

Get Together - FabScraps

Get Together Mixed Media Vintage Wedding Layout by Dana Tatar for FabScraps

Hi! I'm sharing a vintage wedding layout that I created for FabScraps today. The C95 For the Love of Tea Collection is so beautiful. The neutral gray pairs so will with bold bright colors. I had a lot of fun building up the layers on this page to give a bit of a modern twist to an old family wedding photo.

Watercolor Modeling Paste Roses by Dana Tatar for FabScraps

I started this layout by spreading molding paste over the rose portion of the DS 070 Tea Time Stencil to add four roses to the Tea for Three patterned paper; three roses in a cluster left of center and a portion of one rose along the right edge of the paper. Once dry, I colored the roses with watercolor paint.

Shabby Chic Textured Mixed Media Photo Base by Dana Tatar for FabScraps

Next, I tore pieces of 6x6 Prepare for Tea patterned paper into strips and then layered the strips of paper in two columns left of center and between the three stenciled roses on the Tea for Three patterned paper. I cut flower clusters from the Prepare for Tea patterned paper and mixed them with burlap, rope, cheesecloth, flowers, leaves, and pearls to build up a textured focal point where I could secure my photos.

Ice Enamels on Chipboard Title by Dana Tatar for FabScraps

I embossed a chipboard word with Ice Resin Ivory Iced Enamel for the title of this page. Although this product is designed to color metal, I absolutely love how it looks on chipboard. I also added two clear bird stickers to the page.

Watercolor Background Splatter by Dana Tatar for FabScraps

I added a paper flower cluster and Love cupcake, cut from the Sweet Treats patterned paper, to the portion of the stenciled rose along the right edge of the layout. Finally, I splattered the layout with several colors of watercolor paint.

The Stampers' Sampler Publication!

I'm absolutely thrilled to have my work published in the July/August/September 2017 issue of The Stampers' Sampler Magazine (affiliate link)! I sent in a canvas with the hopes of being showcased as part of the Frightful and Delightful Challenge and my wait is over!
Ghoulish Greetings Canvas by Dana Tatar Publication in The Stamper' Stampler

You can find my Ghoulish Greetings Canvas on the top of page 78! I used some of my favorite stamps from Paper Wings Productions, a Tando Creative Chipboard Skeleton, and a Canvas Corp Burlap Canvas for this project.

I stamped onto a piece of tissue paper with the Writing Cling Stamp using black archival ink and then sealed it onto the canvas with gel medium. I added color to the edge of the canvas with Banana, Black Cherry, Blood Orange and Iced Chai Gelatos. I stamped a pair of wings using the Butterfly Wings Cling Stamp Set. I colored the wings with Banana and Blood Orange Gelatos. I used a White Stamper's Big Brush Pen to highlight the pattern on the edge of the wings and then added a layer of gold glitter glue for a bit of sparkle. I used the A Banner Day Clear Stamp Set and the Fall Add-Ons Clear Stamp Set and to create the sentiment banner, which I then colored with an Iced Chai Gelato and Vintage Photo Distress Ink. I kept the Skeleton simple, coloring him with a coat of white acrylic paint and then drawing on a stitched mouth. I finished this piece with a black rose and some hand-dyed ribbon.

If you too are strange and unusual, I highly recommend this issue! You can pick it up directly from Stampington.com or on newsstands today!
