Bark Edge Board Hanging Shelves - Walnut Hollow

Bark Edge Board Haning Shelves by Dana Tatar for Walnut Hollow

I'm super excited to share my quick tutorial for how to create a hanging shelf feature from Bark Edge Boards and rope on the Walnut Hollow blog today! I’ve staked a claim on the corner of my family room as a sort of makeshift office for myself. I had created an area that has all the essential supplies necessary to help run a household. While I was able to get things done in this space, I never really wanted to spend more time than necessary at my desk…until now! I injected a big dose of personality into my corner of the room with some handmade shelves and pieces of art that make me happy. It's no longer a chore to sit at my desk and I’ve noticed that I’m not the only one drawn to this new space. The entire family is spending more time in the room thanks so this fun DIY project, and that's a win-win.

I'd love to have you stop by the Walnut Hollow blog to see just how easy it is to create these shelves.

Fractured Fairy Tale: Cinderella - Singed Heart Shrine Box - ColoriQue

Fractured Fairy Tale Cinderella's Heart Shrine Box by Dana Tatar for ColoriQue

Hi! I'm sharing the piece I created for the Fractured Fairy Tale: Cinderella Collaboration with the ColoriQue by Lisa Marie Jimenez Creative Team and the Sandra Evertson Relics and Artifacts Ambassadors today.

The Relics and Artifacts Egg Shrine immediately caught my eye. After reading this information from the Relics and Artifacts site; “The word Shrine from Latin, scrinium, a case or chest for books or papers, and Old French, escrin, box or case, a dedicated sacred place,” I was sure that this was the right piece to focus on for my portion of the tale. This shrine was the perfect sacred place to hold Cinderella’s heart. I incorporated a silver chest as the foundation for my project. Not only does this chest fit with the literal meaning for the word shrine, it also gave me the opportunity to design and fill a second special place. Cinderella is a love story, so the main focal point of my piece is the Egg Shrine containing the Heart, which I have locked away.

From the beginning of this project I was intrigued by Cinderella's possible motivations and feelings behind her actions. I wanted to go a little deeper with my interpretation of events. My piece is less literal and more symbolic of Cinderella's struggle to move through life while also guarding her heart.

Cinderella has been locked away and wants to break free, but who can she trust? She has been repeatedly let down by the people in her life and needs to guard her heart. Inside the box is a set of winged keys that hold the power to unlock her heart. To whom will she give the key?

Fractured Fairy Tale Cinderella's Heart Shrine Box Chared Back by Dana Tatar for ColoriQue

I chose to distress the entire work to look like it has been through a fire, or cinders. To “char” the box I used a Sponge Dauber to apply Black Diamond and Verdigris ColoriQue to the box. I then used a sanding block to remove the color from the embossed design on the box.

To see how I embellished the inside of the box, and to read my retelling of the first half of Chapter 4, visit the ColoriQue blog.

If you haven't been following this project from the beginning, you'll want to catch up on the previous chapters of the story. The artwork for each piece of the tale is amazing!

We finish up our telling of the last chapter of the tale and add an exciting conclusion to the story next week!

Dead Zone Halloween Mini Album by Dana Tatar for Paper Wings Productions

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. I look forward to this time every year. I've learned that I have a much better success rate of finishing mini albums when I have them complete and ready for photos before the holiday. I had a blast creating this "Dead Zone" Halloween Mini Album with some of my favorite stamp sets and clip art sheets from Paper Wings Productions.

Dead Zone Halloween Mini Album Cover Shaker Box Closeup by Dana Tatar for Paper Wings Productions

I wanted to brighten up the traditional Halloween color palette, so I worked in some patterned papers from the Pink Paislee Vintage Moon collection. (Tell me I'm not the only one still hoarding paper from 2008!) I really love this blue! I tore a page out of Stephen King's novel "The Dead Zone" for use as a title. I wanted to make something fun and eye-catching for the cover, so I assembled a shaker box. I used the Skeleton Mélange Cling Stamp Set with black archival ink to add a flying skeleton to my scene.
Dead Zone Halloween Mini Album Page 1 by Dana Tatar for Paper Wings Productions

The album kit I purchased for this project included both black and brown chipboard pages. I left the black pages uncovered so that I could use some white ink. I stamped an inky circle using white ink and the circle stamp from the Big Textures Cling Stamp Set. I created a dimensional image with a foam sticker blank and an image from the Halloween 1 Clip Art Sheet.

Happy Hauntings Stamped and Embossed Black Tag by Dana Tatar for Paper Wings Productions

I stamped up some tags for an interactive envelope feature. I used the Perfect Numbers Clear Stamp Set to stamp a die-cut with the number 31. I dressed up a black tag with the repetitive greeting "happy hauntings" from the Halloween Mix It Up Clear Stamp Set, using white ink, which I then embossed with clear embossing powder for a shiny finish. The inside of this stitched tag insert has space for photos of my daughters dressed up in their costumes.

I added some boos around a chipboard ghost using the Halloween Mix It Up Clear Stamp Set.

I used another stamp from the Big Textures Cling Stamp Set on page to the left. I filled in the stamped circles with glow-in-the-dark paint! I used the Good Witch Cling Stamp Set for the focal point on the page on the right. I used black acrylic paint to brush a sloppy frame around the stamped image.

Dead Zone Halloween Mini Album Page 5 Graveyard Scene by Dana Tatar for Paper Wings Productions

I think this set of pages is my favorite! I don't use my white ink nearly enough, so I took the opportunity to stamp some more designs on the black chipboard pages. I used the branch stamp from the Winter Wonderland Clear Stamp Set to add some bare branches across the top of these pages. The small bat stamp that I used to fill in some of the empty background space is from the Fall Add On Clear Stamp Set.

Fradie Cat Tombstone by Dana Tatar for Paper Wings Productions

The two small tombstone stamps from the Fall Add On Clear Stamp Set were the perfect size to add more items to the background landscape of this page.

Wicked Witch Tombstone with Ruby Slipper Legs by Dana Tatar for Paper Wings Productions

I filled in some wood veneer tombstones that I inked, embossed, and painted, with images from Clip Art Sheets. Two of the images are from sheets that are no longer available, but the Wicked Witch is included on the Halloween 2 Clip Art Sheet. I thought it would be fun to add some ruby slipper and striped stocking clad skeleton legs to the bottom of the Wicked Witch tombstone!

I embellished a chipboard bat with a stamped greeting, 'flying by to say hi,' which is from the Fall Add Ons Clear Stamp Set.

Halloween Greetings Stamped and Embellished Tag by Dana Tatar for Paper Wings Productions

I embellished a tag with some lace ribbon and lace stamping using the Fringe Lace Clear Stamp. I inked and embossed a wood veneer jack-o-lantern to add dimension to an image from the Halloween 1 Clip Art Sheet.

Dead Zone Halloween Mini Album Page 9 by Dana Tatar for Paper Wings Productions

I used more clip art images to embellish these pages from the Halloween 1 Clip Art Sheet. I used the branch stamp, from the Winter Wonderland Clear Stamp Set, to extend the branched on the patterned paper across the page on the right.

Dead Zone Halloween Mini Album Page 11 by Dana Tatar for Paper Wings Productions
I added another pocket tag for journaling and a photo spot on the last two pages.

Dead Zone Halloween Mini Album Back Cover by Dana Tatar for Paper Wings Productions

I used the Perfect Numbers Clear Stamp Set to add the month and year to the back cover of the album.

I hope I have inspired you to use up some of your older stash and to incorporate stamping into your projects! I created two Halloween mini albums during my previous term with Paper Wings Productions. If you'd like to check them out, follow the links below, but please note that not all the products I used are available. However, the stamp sets are!

Halloween Monster Frames - Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L

DIY Halloween Monster Frames by Dana Tatar for Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L

I'm super excited to share my tutorial for these fun monster frames that I created for Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L today! I created a handful of projects for them as a Guest Designer over the Summer. I am thrilled to announce that I have joined their team full time! This is my first project as an official designer and I'd love to have you stop by the Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L blog and check out my project.

I picked up two 10x12 framed pictures at a thrift store and they were perfect for a Halloween makeover. I decorated my mantel for Thanksgiving and Christmas last year, but this is the first time I have dressed up this space for Halloween. I love the pop of color and personality the upcycled frames have added to my décor. Do you decorate for Halloween? If so, I'd love to see! Leave me a link in the comments section.

Just Keep Breathing Card - Tando Creative

Just Keep Breathing Stamped Crackle Card by Dana Tatar for Tando Creative

Hi! I'm sharing the card I created for the Crackle Theme this week on the Tando Creative Design Blog. I had a lot of fun with colors and patterns for this project. I assembled a simple layered card base and wanted to create a fun focal point.

Just Keep Breathing Stamped Crackle Card Closeup by Dana Tatar for Tando Creative

I used the Valley Road Positive and Negative Foam Stamp Set from Nathalie Kalbach with ink on white cardstock and vellum to create a 2-layer circle piece for the center of the card. Next, I filled the holes in the middle of the stamping with jeweled brads. Finally, I stitched a Button that I painted first with DecoArt Cadmium Red Fluid Acrylic and then with a mix of Primary Yellow Fluid Acrylic and White Crackle Paste. I finished this card with a sentiment sticker.

Song Lyrics Rotary File - StencilGirl Guest Designer

Song Lyrics Rotary File Stenciled Card Catalog by Dana Tatar for StencilGirl

Hi! I'm super excited to be a Guest Designer for StencilGirl today! My brain is about 90% song lyrics. I have hundreds of CDs and have to admit that in this age of digital music, I still buy them. Why? Besides having a superior sound, I love the little booklet that comes along with the music. It usually contains photos of the band/musician (eye candy), excellent artwork (more eye candy), and if I'm lucky, the song lyrics. I've cataloged just over 350 of my favorite lyrics on colorful stenciled cards for this project. This wheel of verses is the closest thing I have to a diary. Spinning through these cards makes me happy, not only because they are alphabetized, but because I know that they will serve as a starting point for a lot more great art.

I have a short video that shares a peek at my cards as they spin around.

You can find my tutorial and supply list for this project on the StencilGirl blog. A big thanks to StencilGirl for the following stencils:

Battle Jacket Tchotchke Pin - Paper Wings Productions

Artsy to the Bone Battle Jacket Tchotchke Pin by Dana Tatar for Paper Wings Productions

Hi! I'm sharing the quick tutorial for how to put together a tchotchke pin on the Paper Wings Productions blog today. I've been working on adding patches and studs to my battle jacket. I'm really loving this form of expression with colorful patches and pins from my favorite bands and artists. I wanted to add some handmade flair to the jacket, for a bit more originality, so I created this one-of-a-kind tchotchke pin with the Paper Wings Productions Meurtos Clear Stamp Set.

I'm seriously ready to rock! This pin is great for wearing and also giving! There is an amazing selection of stamps in the Paper Wings Productions Store that are small enough to fit onto jewelry bases and pins. If you used PWP products to create a piece of wearable art, or any art, we'd love to see it! Share your creations with us on the Paper Wings Productions Facebook Page, in the Paper Wings Productions Facebook Share Group, or leave a link to your work here in the comments section.

King Kong Acrylic Mixed Media Board - Tando Creative

King Kong Acrylic Mixed Media Board by Dana Tatar for Tando Creative

Hi! I'm sharing a King Kong inspired Acrylic Mixed Media Board for the Anything Goes theme this week on the Tando Creative Design Blog. I think acrylic is super fun to work with and I hope I can inspire you to give it a try.

I started this piece by stamping a cityscape onto the back of an Acrylic Mixed Media Board using a portion of Nathalie Kalbach's Urban Scribble Cling Stamp with permanent black ink. I backed the board with a piece of vintage Basic Grey patterned paper from my stash that I've been saving for a fun project. Next, I added a clear gorilla sticker to the front of the board. Then I added doodles on the front of the board over and around the stamped image with a Dylusions White Paint Pen. I finished this piece with a red "K" alphabet sticker, for King Kong, and a strip of paper tape. I really love the effect of being able to work on both sides of this board!

You can find the products I used for this project in the Tando Creative Retail Store. We'd love to see your creativity! Share your work with us in Tando's Creative Zone on Facebook.

Beautiful - Scraps of Darkness Sparkle + Shine Kit

Beautiful Layout by Dana Tatar for Scraps of Darkness - August 2017 Sparkle + Shine Kit

Hi! I'm sharing another layout that I created with the Scraps of Darkness August Sparkle and Shine Kit. Several of the patterned papers from the Prima Rose Quartz and Simple Stories Beautiful collections had me thinking of geodes and marble. These prints reminded me of a photo I took this Summer of Arch Rock on Mackinac Island in Michigan. This landmark is a natural limestone formation and is absolutely beautiful in real life.

Beautiful Layout Closeup by Dana Tatar for Scraps of Darkness - August 2017 Sparkle + Shine Kit

I used one of the maps from the Prima Rose Quartz Beautiful Glory patterned paper (Main Kit) as a base for my photo. I added orange and green to this color palette with sheets of Art-C Ephemera, Simple Stories Clear Stickers, and Prima Traveler's Tape, which are all included in the Elements Add-On.

No layout for me is really complete without flowers. I added a small pink bloom from the Floral Add-On to the corner of my photos. I also added some black and white flowers that I cut from the Simple Stories Simply Wonderful patterned paper (Main Kit).

I'm really loving the versatility of the products in this kit. I've created a fun mix of both clean and simple and shabby chic designs. If you missed my previous projects, click on the following links:

Hello Beautiful - Scraps of Darkness Sparkle and Shine Kit

Hello Beautiful Layout by Dana Tatar for Scraps of Darkness - August 2017 Sparkle and Shine Kit

Hi! I'm sharing another layout that I created with the Scraps of Darkness August Sparkle and Shine Kit. I had a lot of fun mixing prints on this page, using polka dots, florals, and stripes. My Sister-in-Law took this photo. She was able to style my oldest daughter for a fun photo shoot. I would need a serious bribe to get a result like this, so this picture is definitely worth documenting!

Hello Beautiful Clear Sticker Title by Dana Tatar for Scraps of Darkness - August 2017 Sparkle and Shine Kit

I used a Simple Stories Clear Sticker (Elements Add-On) for the title of this layout. This was a great way to add color and text at the same time.

Hello Beautiful Puffy Sticker Embellishment by Dana Tatar for Scraps of Darkness - August 2017 Sparkle and Shine Kit

I also love the Prima Rose Quartz Puffy Stickers (Main Kit)! They are such a fun way to add dimension to the page. This embellishment package comes with an identical sheet of cardstock stickers, some of which I tucked into the flower cluster.

Hello Beautiful Gold Paint Pen Border by Dana Tatar for Scraps of Darkness - August 2017 Sparkle and Shine Kit

I cut some of the circle prints from the patterned paper to help fill in the space on the bottom half of this layout. I used the Gold Calligraphy Paint Marker from the Main Kit to add a fun doodled edge to help finish my design.

Beautiful Memories - Scraps of Darkness August Sparkle and Shine Kit

Beautiful Memories Layout by Dana Tatar for Scraps of Darkness - August Sparkle and Shine Kit

Hi! I'm sharing another layout that I created with the Scraps of Darkness August Sparkle and Shine Kit. I combined the gorgeous flower print patterned papers from the Main Kit and some blooms from the Floral Add-On with an old family photo of my Grandmother for this page.

Beautiful Memories Layered Ephemera Closeup by Dana Tatar for Scraps of Darkness - August Sparkle and Shine Kit

I layered pieces of sheet music from the Art-C Book Pages Ephemera Pack (Elements Add-On) with Simple Stories Cardstock Stickers and Bits and Pieces Die-Cuts (Main Kit) to create a base for my photos. I just love the fancy borders and music on the ephemera pages!

Beautiful Memories Flower Cluster Closeup by Dana Tatar for Scraps of Darkness - August Sparkle and Shine Kit

The mix of flowers in the Main Kit and Floral Add-On are so beautiful. It was hard not to use all of them here! I filled in this flower cluster with leaves that I cut from the patterned papers.

Couch Arm Coffee Table - Walnut Hollow

Couch Arm Coffee Table by Dana Tatar for Walnut Hollow

Hi! I'm sharing the tutorial for how I put together this couch arm coffee table on the Walnut Hollow blog today. This may just be my favorite project to date. Due to space constraints, I do not have any side tables. Before I put together this handy table, I was not able to curl up on my couch with a great book and a hot cup of coffee. I'm so happy that my struggles are over! You can pick up the wood pieces I used to create this table from the Walnut Hollow Store for a fraction of the cost of my catalog inspiration piece. I chose to protect the wood with a simple coat of DecoArt DuraClear Gloss Varnish, but paint or some wood burning (or both!) would also look fantastic on this piece.

I'd love for you to stop by the Walnut Hollow blog to check out my tutorial. What would you put on this table?

Whimsical House Mixed Media Board - Tando Creative

Whimsical House Mixed Media Board by Dana Tatar

Hi! I'm sharing my take on the Color Theme this week on the Tando Creative Design Blog. I was so inspired by the piece Carol shared on Monday that I decided to use a house as the focal point on my project. I have new houses on the brain because I just found out that I will be moving this coming June. I know time between now and my move will fly by, so I'm trying to create as many lasting memories as I can where I'm at before I have to leave.

I painted up a Mixed Media Board, Whimsical House (Set 1), Mini Flower, and the Arthur Numbers 5700, which is my current address, with DecoArt acrylic paint. I also used a piece of Grass Flexistrip, that I decided to leave raw for contrast. After I assembled my scene, I added colorful dots to the piece with the tip of my paintbrush handle.

I really love this color palette, especially the pop of purple, which I happily used to paint the door on this piece. I had painted my front door a much bolder purple when I moved in to my current house a couple years ago, and was just recently asked to repaint it an approved color by the neighborhood Home Owners Association.

You can find the products I used for this project in the Tando Creative Retail Store. We'd love to see your creativity! Share your work with us in Tando's Creative Zone on Facebook.

Love Today Dream Catcher Canvas - Scraps of Darkness

Love Today Dream Catcher Mixed Media Canvas by Dana Tatar for Scraps of Darkness August Sparkle and Shine Kit

Hi! I'm sharing a feathered dream catcher canvas that I created with the Scraps of Darkness August Sparkle and Shine Kit. The gorgeous Prima Rose Quartz Grace feather patterned paper (Main Kit) and the wreath from the 49 and Market Natural Blush Blooms (Floral Add-On) were my inspiration for this piece. I used a 9x12 canvas board from my stash for the base of this project. If you don't have a canvas board, the box your kit came in would also work!

Love Today Dream Catcher Canvas Closeup by Dana Tatar for Scraps of Darkness August Sparkle and Shine Kit

I started this project by layering pieces of sheet music from the Art-C Book Pages Ephemera Pack(Elements Add-On) onto the canvas. Then, I brushed on a light layer of watered-down gesso to mute the print on the papers. I used my fingers to apply Jacquard Lumiere True Gold Acrylic Paint (Color Add-On) to the canvas. Next, I spritzed on Tim Holtz Hickory Smoke Spray Stain and sponged on Worn Lipstick Distress Oxide Ink (Color Add-On).

While my canvas was drying, I taped the wreath into a circle using the Prima Traveler's Decorative Tape from the Elements Add-On. Next, I cut feathers from the Prima Rose Quartz Grace patterned paper, tied a length of white baker's twine to each feather, and then tied the feathers to the wreath.

I used a hot glue gun to attach the dream catcher to the canvas and then glued on a mix of pink flowers from the Main Kit and the Floral Add-On.

Love Today Dream Catcher Canvas Feather Closeup by Dana Tatar for Scraps of Darkness August Sparkle and Shine Kit

Once the dream catcher was secured to the canvas base, I added a portion of the pink ostrich feather (Elements Add-On), Simple Stories clear stickers (Elements Add-On), Darice pink sequins (Main Kit), and Prima Rose Quartz puffy feather stickers (Main Kit). I finished this canvas with some Prima watercolor shading and splatters.
